What does "Natural" mean to Joan Morais?

To Joan Morais, natural cosmetics are made with ingredients sourced from nature, including plants, minerals, and renewable raw materials.

Natural formulation uses ingredients that are thoughtfully selected, minimally processed when possible, and created with methods that are mindful of people, animals, and the planet.

This includes plant-based ingredients, bio-based ingredients, green chemistry principles, and sustainable technologies that support effective skin care and hair care formulation.

Natural cosmetics should be clean, responsible, nourishing, and designed to support healthy-looking, radiant skin and hair.

What equipment do I need?

The course includes an Equipment Lesson that explains different equipment options based on the level and scale of production you want to work toward.ment

The equipment is organized into four levels:
Level 1: Kitchen Equipment
For beginners, small batches, and those just starting out.

Level 2: Lab Equipment
For formulating, testing, and small production.

Level 3: Medium Batch Production
For larger batch sizes, around 42 pounds, 5 gallons, or 19 liters.

Level 4: Manufacturing Lab Equipment
For larger-scale production using professional lab and manufacturing equipment.

You do not need to purchase expensive equipment before starting the course. Many students begin with common kitchen equipment or basic lab tools, depending on their goals and budget.

We recommend learning the course material first before buying equipment. The course will guide you through different equipment options, resources, and considerations so you can decide what makes the most sense for your formulation goals and the scale you want to start with.

What ingredients are used in your formulations?

Our formulations use high-quality cosmetic raw materials and ingredients that are carefully selected for natural, vegan, and cruelty-free formulation.

The ingredients may include plant-based oils, butters, waxes, extracts, humectants, emulsifiers, surfactants, thickeners, active ingredients, and preservatives used in natural cosmetic formulation. Many of the ingredients are selected with a focus on renewable, bio-based, biodegradable, and sustainable options when available.

Most of the main ingredients used in the course can be sourced from cosmetic ingredient suppliers in many countries. Because students are located around the world, ingredient availability can vary by country and supplier.

We do not provide one fixed ingredient shopping list for every student because there are often ingredient options and substitutions depending on where you are sourcing from. The course teaches you how ingredients function, so you can better understand how to select appropriate ingredients and make substitutions when needed.

Do you use preservatives in water-based formulations?

Yes, we do use preservatives when they are needed, especially in water-based formulations.

Preservatives are very important because any formula that contains water can grow bacteria, yeast, and mold if it is not properly preserved. A water-based cosmetic product without a preservative is similar to leaving yogurt unrefrigerated and hoping it will stay safe. It can become contaminated and unsafe to use.

Our goal is to teach students how to create products that are safe, stable, and suitable for consumers. In the course, we educate students on preservative systems and how to use them correctly in natural formulations.

The preservatives used in our formulations are accepted by natural standards such as ECOCERT and COSMOS. We also teach about preservatives derived from renewable sources, including plant-based sources, and how to choose appropriate preservation systems for different types of products.

Will I learn to formulate?

Yes, you will learn how to formulate and make natural hair care and/or skin care products.

The course lessons are in-depth and designed to teach you the foundations of cosmetic formulation, including how ingredients work, how to create balanced formulas, and how to make products step by step.

You will learn both the theory and the practical methods needed to create natural formulations with more confidence, skill, and understanding.

Will I receive course materials?

Yes. The course includes downloadable materials such as formulas, procedures, lessons, and supporting resources.

These materials are available inside your course account. We recommend saving the downloads to your downloads or computer and printing them if you would like a physical copy for your personal use.

I live in another country, how can I find resources and raw materials?

Yes, you can take the course if you live in another country. We have students from all over the world enrolled in our courses.

The course includes many resources, and we do our best to select ingredients that are commonly available and easier to source. You can also research raw material and cosmetic ingredient suppliers in your own country, as well as suppliers in other countries that may ship to you.

If you are unable to find a specific ingredient, we can help guide you with possible substitutions when needed.

The formulation training is taught in a way that can be applied internationally, so you can learn the principles of natural cosmetic formulation no matter where you are located.

Are there set times I need to participate in the Course? Is there a schedule?

The Professional Formulation Courses are self-paced, so you can study on your own schedule.

During the 8-week guided course period, you will receive a weekly email to help guide you through the course modules. If you would like to complete the course in 8 weeks, we recommend following the weekly schedule and reviewing the suggested modules each week.

You may also work ahead or take more time if needed. Each student can choose the pace that works best for them.

You will have lifetime course access, so you can continue reviewing the lessons and training materials after the guided period ends.

The course also includes eight Module Reviews to help you review and reinforce each group of modules.

Will I be able to make safe products for the market?

The course provides information, instruction, and guidance to help you understand how to formulate safe, stable, and effective products for the market.

You will learn about important professional practices, including Good Manufacturing Practices, also called GMP, and pre-market testing. These steps help confirm that a product is properly made, stable, and suitable before it is sold.

While the course gives you the formulation knowledge and professional guidance needed, each student is responsible for completing the appropriate testing, following cosmetic regulations, and meeting the requirements for the country or region where their products will be sold.

What skill level is required? Can I start as a beginner?

Yes, you can absolutely start as a beginner with no prior formulation experience.

Our Diploma Certification Courses teach you step by step how to make and formulate professional natural hair care and skin care products. The training is in-depth and designed to help you understand ingredients, formulation methods, product development, and how to create stable, effective products.

Our students range from beginners to intermediate and advanced formulators. Many students join because they want to start their own natural hair care or skin care line. Others already have a product line and want to improve their formulas, add new products, or take more control over their manufacturing.

You do not need prior experience to begin. The course is designed to guide you from the foundation into professional formulation skills.

How long is the course?

The guided Professional Formulation Courses are 8 weeks long.

During the 8-week guided period, you will receive weekly guidance to help you move through the course step by step.

You also receive lifetime course access, so you can complete the course at your own pace and continue reviewing the lessons and training materials whenever needed, for as long as the course remains available.
