Yes. We use preservatives when they are needed, particularly in water-based formulations.
Proper preservation is essential because products containing water can support the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold if they are not adequately preserved.
Our goal is to teach students how to create products that are safe, stable, and suitable for consumer use. Throughout the course, you’ll learn about preservative systems, how they work, and how to select and use them appropriately in natural formulations.
The preservatives used in our formulations are selected with natural cosmetic standards in mind, including systems accepted by standards such as ECOCERT and COSMOS. We also discuss preservative options derived from renewable and plant-based sources and how preservation requirements vary by product type.
Our formulations use high-quality cosmetic-grade raw materials selected for natural, vegan, and cruelty-free formulation.
Ingredients may include plant oils, butters, waxes, botanical extracts, humectants, emulsifiers, surfactants, thickeners, active ingredients, and preservative systems. When appropriate and available, we prioritize renewable, bio-based, biodegradable, and more sustainable ingredient options.
Most of the primary ingredients used in the course can be sourced from cosmetic ingredient suppliers in many countries. Because our students are located worldwide, ingredient availability will vary by region and supplier.
Rather than relying on one fixed ingredient shopping list, the course teaches you how ingredients function and why they are used. This helps you make informed ingredient selections and understand appropriate substitutions when needed.
The course includes a dedicated Equipment Lesson that explains equipment options based on your experience level and the scale of production you want to achieve.
Equipment is organized into four levels:
Level 1 — Kitchen Equipment
For beginners, small batches, and those just getting started.
Level 2 — Lab Equipment
For formulation, testing, and small-scale production.
Level 3 — Medium Batch Production
For larger batch sizes, approximately 42 pounds / 5 gallons / 19 liters.
Level 4 — Manufacturing Lab Equipment
For larger-scale production using professional laboratory and manufacturing equipment.
You do not need to purchase expensive equipment before starting the course. Many students begin with basic kitchen or lab equipment, depending on their goals and budget.
