  1. Tenille Pierre

I have always wanted to learn how to make shampoo bars. I have used different shampoo bars and I am yet to find one that can be compared to this formula. It is gentle and does a great job cleaning the hair without stripping it. After use, my Type 4c hair feels soft to the touch with a nice sheen. It works for any hair type. Anything that strips your hair leaves it susceptible to dryness and breakage. It is also ideal for persons with sensitive skin and hard water. Shampoo bars are not cold processed soap. Lye is used to make soap which has a high pH. Cold processed soap will make your hair feel heavy and weighed down and cause a lot of damage overtime whereas shampoo bars are simply a solid form to your everyday liquid shampoo. It uses mild surfactants and is pH balanced which is great for the hair. It is also travel friendly and lasts a long time which makes it more cost effective than your traditional shampoo. Joan shows three (3) different versions of making the bar and how to work with both powdered surfactants and noodles. She shows how to test the pH of the bar which is slightly different from a regular shampoo. She provides you with tips on how to incorporate herbs and other ingredients. The options are endless. You have room for creativity and uniqueness.

The Shampoo Bar Class remembered my grandmother 30 years ago when she washes her hair with a blue soap bar (casually) and told me that it was a way to save money and survive. I enrolled in this lab class due I wanted to learn about these waterless shampoo bars; I think that for me is a good option to avoid a lot of plastic bottles of different products in my bathroom. After completing the class, I know how to make shampoo bars explained step by step; Joan Morais classes always have the section to customize the formulations.

I made a customized small shampoo bars version as “to-go” with proper packaging to use after natural disaster since I live in tropical island where hurricanes can hit the island easily every year; personal care products disappear from stores. I used them in the scenario of Power Failure and interruption of water service during few days and the customized version were very useful combined with small version of conditioners bars. The shampoo bars cleaned my hair gently (as expected) due I customized them for my hair type and condition as I learned in the class.

They can be customized for travel or any scenario. Joan Morais explains everything step by step. Learning to make this formulation is money saving.
