5 Hair Types

We will go over the 5 hair types: Straight, Wavy, Curly, Coily and Locs. Hair is beautiful and unique. Each person has hair that is special to them. Hair type and texture is the shape of one’s hair. One can have more than one hair type or texture. 


Straight Hair – Type 1a, 1b,1c

Appearance: Straight 

About: Sheeny and resilient, harder to curl, most oily

Wavy Hair – Type 2a, 2b, 2c

Appearance: Forms a loose “S” and very easily straightened

About: Has some sheen, prone to frizz.  2A easily alternates between straight and curly state. 2B and 2C are resistant to styling

Curly Hair – Type 3a, 3b, 3c

Forms a definite “S”shaped like a corkscrew

About: Can be dry, damage prone and climate dependent

Coily Hair – Type 4a, 4b, 4c

Appearance: Very tight curls. When stretched, creates an “S”

About: Most fragile and fine hair. Prone to hair breakage. Important to cleanse gently, detangle softly, and avoid harsh chemicals


Appearance: Hair strands coiled around each other into fused units.

About: Locs do best with a healthy scalp
