All About Hair: Hair Types and Scalp Conditions

Let’s talk about hair! Short, long, curly, straight, frizzy, dry, oily, natural, relaxed, and the list goes on. Everyone’s hair is unique to them. At Joan Morais Naturals we are all about celebrating YOUR hair and what you can do to nourish and care for your hair in the best way for YOU.

Most hair products you find at the store and even the hair salons are not going to be nourishing for your unique hair needs. Did you know that most shampoos are meant to dry out your hair so that you then need conditioner to add the moisture back in?! Our scalp is a part of our skin and has a natural balance of oils. Our scalp, however, can easily get off track due to a variety of reasons including our personal health, our hormones, and environmental exposure including weather, sun and hair color and products.

Our hair is actually dead, but we can still do things to take care of our hair and scalp to create vibrancy and health. Lets learn about different hair types and some ways we can best take care of our hair to bring out its natural beauty!

Hair Types

Normal: Hair is balanced- not too oily or too dry. The hair has shine and vibrancy and can use most natural hair care products.

Dry: Hair looks dull, brittle and frizzy. It is lacking moisture and may have split ends and scalp may have dry flakes. Shampoo dry hair less frequently and use natural hair care products with moisturizing agents and contain essential fatty acids.

Oily: Hair has excessive moisture. It lacks body and looks dull and weighed down. The imbalance may be from diet, hormones, medications, health issues and product use. Wash hair frequently with mild shampoo to reduce oil production.

Scalp Conditions

Stress: Stress can cause hair loss or hair to change color. Take a look at our past presidents at the beginning of the term to the end of their presidency to see a dramatic difference! In times of stress use essential oils and herbs on the scalp that promote relaxation and calmness.

Hair Loss: Hair loss is also called alopecia. Alopecia can be heredity or be from medications, hormonal changes, and chemical hair applications such as hair color, relaxation and perms. Prevention is the best way to counter hair loss. A daily scalp massage with jojoba oil prior to shampooing has been known to promote a healthy scalp.

Dandruff: Dandruff occurs when the scalp is out of balance. It can be oily or dry. Use essential oils and herbs that are anti-fungal and balancing.

Come back next week as we go over the best plant oils, essential oils and herbs for your hair type and scalp!
