This is Part 2 of by our expert guest, Kayla Fioravanti of Ology Essentials. Part 1 is here. Hemp CBD is a clean and green ingredient that is naturally sourced and extremely versatile. Read below to learn how to formulate with Hemp CBD.
Adding Hemp CBD to Formulas:
By Kayla Fioravanti
You have three main options when adding hemp CBD to your formulations:
- Hemp CBD Isolate Oil
- Hemp CBD Full Spectrum Oil
- Hemp CBD Isolate Crystal
(There is also broad spectrum CBD but the prices on that have not settled into a reasonable range so I’m going to skip past it. But if you use it, the same principles apply for formulating.)
Using hemp CBD in the oil form makes for easy math. You simply use the mg to mL dosing from the bottle you purchase, your batch size, and the number of finished products you have, to determine your mg to mL per product.
For instance, let’s say you are using Ology Essentials 6000 mg/120 mL Isolate Extract THC-Free to make 60 bottles of 120 mL massage oil products.
Quick Math 60 bottles of 120 mL
120 grams Isolate Extract THC-Free 6000 mg
72 grams Essential Oil (1%)7008 grams Carrier Oil
This batch size makes 60 bottles of finished product, so 6000 mg divided by 60 = 100 mg CBD per 120 mL bottle of massage oil.
Now let’s look at the cost using Ology Essential prices (you may find better or worse prices out there on the market, but this is the math I know):
Hemp CBD Isolate Oil 6000 mg/120 mL costs $300 wholesale at Ology Essentials, which increases your cost of finished goods by $5 each and the market price for a 120 mL hemp CBD massage oil is between $45-$95 each.
You can vary your product size or your CBD concentration to reach different costs per goods goals.
Now let’s take a quick look at working with Hemp CBD Isolate Crystal which is 99.7% pure hemp CBD which means every gram of isolate crystal contains 997 mg of hemp CBD.
Take whatever finished concentration level that you want and divide it by 997. For instance, with the same finished product:
100 mg ÷ 997 = 0.1003 grams Hemp CBD Isolate Crystal per 120 mL finished product.
Quick Math 60 bottles of 120 mL
6.018 grams Isolate Extract Crystal 99.7% pure
72 grams Essential Oil (1%)
7121.982 grams Carrier Oil
Now let’s look at the cost:
Isolate Extract Crystal 99.7% costs $19.99 (in small quantities) wholesale per gram at Ology Essentials, which increases your cost of finished goods by $2.00 each and again the market price for a 120 mL hemp CBD massage oil is again between $45-$95 each.
Working from the isolate is the most affordable way, but if you want full spectrum you will need to work with the oil unless you are ready to purchase in large enough quantities to work with CBD distillate.
CBD isolate crystal is a fat soluble. It must be mixed hot into a carrier oil or it also dissolves in alcohol. Whether you dissolve it in alcohol or oil depends on what kind of formula you are creating.
The most effective products for topical hemp CBD products are leave on products such as a lotion, cream, salve, ointment, or spray.
I have always suspected that putting hemp CBD in soap would be a complete waste of hemp CBD and money. To confirm my suspicions, I went straight to the expert of all soap experts—Kevin Dunn.
Kevin confirmed and explained,
“Two reasons not to use CBD in soap. The most important you already said—in a wash off product, nearly all will go down the drain. Almost none will be absorbed through the skin.
“The second reason is that CBD will react with lye to produce the sodium salt of CBD, which is water soluble, not fat soluble, so even lower chance of absorption through the skin. Only one reason to use CBD in soap: label appeal, in which case use as little as possible just to get it on the label.”
