Face Mask

A face mask is a skin treatment and product that you will see noticeable results in a short amount of time. A facial mask is a treatment for the skin. The skin looks fresher, smoother, more even toned, and radiant. It has a beautiful glow to it. A facial mask treatment can be used for every age and every type of skin. It’s excellent to add a face mask to your product line and skin regimen at home.

Formulating a Face Mask

A formulator must understand the types of face masks and how they perform. They can be nourishing, detoxifying, and exfoliating. A face mask removes the dead layers of the skin, helps to improve circulation, pull toxins and impurities out of the skin, and nourish the skin. This skin treatment smooths, tightens, brightens, and tones the skin. It can also be used as a spot treatment to clear blemishes. Formulating a face mask begins with determining the skin type it is for and the type of mask that works best for that skin type.

Nourishing Face Mask
A nourishing mask adds hydration and moisture and replenishes the skin. Ingredients to include in the formulation are vitamins, fruits and botanical powders like avocado, cranberry, pumpkin, blueberry, banana, and green tea. Plant-based milks like coconut milk powder, rice milk powder, and soy milk powder soften, smooth, soften, and moisturize the skin. Grains like oat flour, ground oatmeal, and colloidal oats assist with evening skin tone and smoothing the skin. This type of mask works well on most skin types.

Detoxifying Face Mask
A detoxifying mask contains highly absorbent clays such as green clay, illite clay, and kaolin clay. Clays are rich in minerals. They pull out and absorb excess dirt, and oil. Clay masks exfoliate, tone, strengthen the skin, and improve skin circulation. Green clay masks can be drying and work best with oily and congested skin. Some clays are not so absorbent and can be used for most skin types, try rhassoul clay, and kaolin clay.

Nourishing and Detoxifying Face Mask
A mask containing nourishing and detoxifying ingredients to detoxify and add nourishment back into the skin are great for most skin types.

Exfoliating Face Mask
An exfoliating mask contains mechanical (physical) or chemical ingredients. A mechanical exfoliating mask contains grains, jojoba beads, or nut meals to physically remove the dead skin cells. It’s important these ingredients are smooth and not jagged which can cause micro-tears or abrasions. A chemical exfoliating mask contains alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, such as acidic fruits, or glycolic acid and these dissolve dead skin cells.

Consistency of a Face Mask

A mask should be a little thick to adhere to the skin, about the consistency of pudding. If the mask is too thick it will not spread easily on the skin. Pour a little liquid at a time as it takes time for the mask to absorb the liquid, mix and add more liquid until you reach the desired consistency.

How To Apply A Face Mask

Apply the mask to the face, neck, and décolleté.

One of the best ways to apply a face mask is with a clean large makeup brush with soft bristles. It feels so soothing and relaxing to paint the mask onto the skin. And it’s fun too. Make sure and source a cruelty-free makeup brush. There are natural bristle brushes made from plants and synthetic bristle brushes that are better than animal-derived brushes.

You can always use your fingers to gently apply the mask onto your skin. Massaging the skin while applying the mask feels so good.

How Long To Leave A Face Mask On

The time to leave a mask on the skin depends on the type of mask and the skin type. Generally, a mask is left on for 5-10 minutes. Some masks dry quickly, pull the skin and this feels uncomfortable, wash off thoroughly with water.

Best Time To Do A Face Mask

It is easiest to put the mask on before your shower or bath. The mask washes off easily while taking a shower or bath. A washcloth can be used but it is messier.

How Often To Do A Face Mask

It depends on the type of mask and the person’s skin, generally a nourishing face mask can be applied once a week, a detoxifying mask containing green clay about once a month.
