About Luminafrik

Luminafrik, as the slogan goes “embracing Africa’s glow,” is a skincare brand deeply rooted in my personal story, African heritage, and the healing power of traditional African ingredients.

As a child, I suffered from a severe skin condition that caused painful fluid-filled rashes and wounds across my body. The condition affected not only my skin but also my confidence and quality of life. During that difficult time, my mother cared for my skin using traditional remedies, particularly pure African Shea Butter and African Black Soap. Day after day, she applied shea butter to soothe, nourish, and help restore my skin. Those experiences gave me a firsthand understanding of the remarkable benefits of these natural ingredients.

Growing up in a Ghanaian household, shea butter was more than a skincare ingredient it was part of our daily lives. In our Ewe culture, known as “Yorkumi,” shea butter was used for everything from moisturizing the skin to soothing coughs, relieving dry lips, and comforting sore muscles. African Black Soap was equally important and was the primary cleansing soap we used as children.

Years later, after moving abroad, I found myself searching for products that could match the quality and effectiveness of the raw, unrefined shea butter and African ingredients I grew up with. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to create it myself.

That journey led to the birth of Luminafrik. Today, the brand combines traditional African beauty wisdom with modern formulation knowledge to create high-quality skincare products that nourish and support healthy skin. Every product reflects my passion for sharing the authentic ingredients, traditions, and healing practices that played such an important role in my own life.

Luminafrik is more than a skincare brand it is a tribute to my heritage, my healing journey, and the generations of knowledge that inspired me to help others embrace their natural glow.

What inspired you to make your own products?

I started my brand out of a personal need. I was looking for effective, everyday skincare that actually moisturized and supported healthy skin long-term, and when I couldn’t find exactly that, I decided to create it myself

What was the hardest part of starting your business?

One of the hardest part I’ve faced has been growing the brand with intention while navigating limited resources. Building awareness, reaching the right audience, and staying consistent takes both time and strategy. At the same time, securing the capital needed to scale has been difficult, especially when it comes to marketing and ensuring every product meets high standards for safety, quality, and compliance. Choosing to prioritize doing things the right way, even when it’s costly or slow, has been challenging, but it’s a responsibility I take seriously as a brand owner.

What equipment or ingredients did you first start out with?

When I first started, I kept things very simple. I worked with basic equipment such as digital scales, mixing bowls, spatulas, measuring tools, and small containers. My earliest ingredients included shea butter, African black soap, carrier oils, and other natural ingredients that reflected my passion for African-inspired skincare. I focused on learning the fundamentals before gradually investing in more advanced equipment and expanding my ingredient knowledge.

How did your training at Joan Morais Cosmetics School help your business?

My training helped bridge the gap between practical experience and professional formulation knowledge. Although I had already spent years researching, formulating, and building my skincare business, the course gave me a deeper understanding of ingredients, formulation science, product development, and industry best practices. It increased my confidence as a formulator and business owner, allowing me to better serve my customers and continue developing effective, high-quality products with greater expertise.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of building my business from the ground up through determination, self-education, and faith. Everything I learned before enrolling was self-taught through countless hours of research, testing, and hands-on experience. Earning my certification while actively running my business is a milestone that represents years of hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning and excellence.

What advice would you give to other hair entrepreneurs?

Start with education and patience. Take the time to understand ingredients, formulation, product safety, and your customers’ needs. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have all the resources right away. Begin where you are, keep learning, and focus on creating quality products rather than rushing to launch. Testing, consistency, and continuous improvement are key. Most importantly, believe in yourself, stay committed to your vision, and don’t be afraid to invest in your knowledge because education is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your business.

Anything else to share?

I would like to thank Joan Morais and her team for creating a learning environment that empowers formulators at every stage of their journey. As a self-taught entrepreneur, earning this certification was an important achievement that validated years of hard work and dedication. I am grateful for the knowledge, encouragement, and support I received through the program. I also hope my story inspires others to keep learning, keep growing, and never give up on their dreams, no matter where they start.
