How to Make Alkanet Root Oil: Natural Color for Lip Balms

Use alkanet oil in lip balms for a light red color, in creams for a light pink color, in scrubs for a pink color and in soaps for a light bluish purple color.

HOW TO MAKE ALKANET ROOT OIL

1. In a glass jar: Add 1 tablespoon alkanet root to ½ cup of carrier oil (sweet almond oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, jojoba oil or olive oil).

2. Infuse for 2 days to 2 weeks.

3. Strain alkanet root from oil: Use a muslin cloth or an unbleached paper coffee filter and place in a funnel. Place funnel on top of a jar. Pour oil with alkanet through muslin or coffee filter, straining pure oil into the jar.

For Immediate Results

1. In a small cooking pot: Add 1 tablespoon alkanet root to ½ cup of carrier oil (sweet almond oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, jojoba oil or olive oil).

2. Heat pot on the lowest stove setting to gently warm oil for about 10-20 minutes. Remove pot from heat. Make sure not to overheat and ruin the oil.

3. Strain alkanet root from oil: Use a muslin cloth or an unbleached paper coffee filter and place in a funnel. Place funnel on top of a jar. Pour oil with alkanet through muslin or coffee filter, straining pure oil into jar.

note: I buy the loose dried herb, not the powder. The loose herb is easier to strain out.
