How to Support the Skin Barrier Through Cosmetic Formulation

The skin barrier plays an essential role in maintaining healthy-looking, comfortable, hydrated skin. When the barrier becomes compromised, the skin may feel dry, tight, rough, sensitive, or more reactive to products and environmental conditions.

The outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, is a major part of the skin barrier. It helps regulate water loss while protecting the skin from environmental stressors and potentially irritating substances.

For cosmetic formulators, the goal is to create products that work with the skin’s natural barrier rather than unnecessarily stripping or disrupting it.

Natural and plant-based ingredients can be part of this approach, but successful barrier-supportive formulation depends on the entire formula—including its humectants, emollients, lipids, occlusive ingredients, cleansing system, pH, and overall mildness.

 


Why Moisture Loss Matters

One of the primary functions of the skin barrier is to help regulate the amount of water that escapes from the skin.

This natural movement of water through the epidermis and stratum corneum is called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL.

When the barrier is functioning effectively, the skin is better able to retain moisture. When barrier integrity is compromised, water may escape more readily, contributing to dryness, tightness, roughness, and discomfort.

This is why a well-designed moisturizer does more than simply add water to the skin.

An effective formulation can combine ingredients that:

  • Attract and retain water
  • Soften and smooth the skin
  • Supplement the skin’s surface lipids
  • Form a protective film
  • Help reduce excessive moisture loss
  • Support overall skin comfort

 

Ingredients That Can Help Support the Skin Barrier

Plant Oils, Butters + Waxes

Plant oils, butters, and waxes can be valuable ingredients in barrier-supportive formulations.

They primarily act as emollients and occlusive or semi-occlusive ingredients, depending on their composition and the finished product.

They can help soften the skin, improve flexibility, smooth roughness, and slow the evaporation of water from the skin’s surface.

Plant oils also differ considerably in their fatty-acid composition, oxidative stability, sensory characteristics, and suitability for different skin types.

Examples include:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Sunflower seed oil
  • Argan oil
  • Meadowfoam seed oil
  • Marula oil
  • Almond oil
  • Coconut oil

Plant butters such as shea butter can add richness and occlusion to creams, balms, and other products designed for dry or moisture-depleted skin.

The formulator should select oils and butters based on the desired fatty-acid profile, skin feel, stability, level of occlusion, and intended skin type rather than simply adding oils because they are natural.

Ceramides

Ceramides are an important class of lipids naturally present in the stratum corneum.

Along with cholesterol and free fatty acids, they form part of the lipid matrix surrounding the corneocytes in the skin barrier.

Ceramide-containing ingredients can be incorporated into formulations designed to support dry, mature, sensitive, or barrier-compromised skin.

When working with ceramides, always follow the supplier’s recommendations for:

  • Usage rate
  • Solubility
  • Processing
  • Temperature
  • pH
  • Incorporation method

Not all commercial ceramide ingredients are formulated or processed in the same way.

Lipids + Free Fatty Acids

Lipids are essential components of the skin barrier.

The major lipid classes associated with the stratum corneum include:

  • Ceramides
  • Cholesterol
  • Free fatty acids

Together, these lipids help form the organized matrix surrounding the corneocytes.

In cosmetic formulation, lipid-rich ingredients and carefully selected emollients can help support softness, flexibility, moisturization, and skin comfort.

This is especially useful when formulating for dry, mature, sensitive, or environmentally stressed skin.

Humectants

Humectants are water-loving ingredients that help attract and retain moisture within the stratum corneum.

Useful humectants include:

  • Glycerin
  • Betaine
  • Sodium PCA
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Sodium lactate
  • Beta-glucan
  • Propanediol

Humectants are particularly valuable in lotions, creams, serums, gels, toners, and other water-based products.

However, humectants are only one part of an effective moisturizing system.

For dry or barrier-compromised skin, they are often most effective when combined with emollients and occlusive ingredients that help reduce moisture evaporation.


 

Humectants + Emollients + Occlusives

A well-designed moisturizer commonly uses several complementary ingredient categories.

Humectants help attract and retain water.

Emollients soften and smooth the skin and improve flexibility.

Occlusives create a protective surface film that helps slow water evaporation.

Rather than searching for one ingredient that will “repair the skin barrier,” formulators should think about how these ingredient groups work together within the finished formulation.

For example, a barrier-support cream might combine:

Glycerin + Beta-Glucan + Ceramides + Jojoba Oil + Shea Butter

Each ingredient serves a different function, creating a more complete moisturizing system.

Moisturization + TEWL

Maintaining adequate skin hydration is important for keeping the skin feeling soft, smooth, flexible, and comfortable.

An effective moisturizing formulation can help support hydration in two primary ways:

1. Increasing water retention within the stratum corneum

Humectants help attract and hold water.

2. Slowing the evaporation of water from the skin

Emollient and occlusive ingredients can help reduce moisture loss from the surface.

This is why formulators should consider TEWL, hydration, lipid support, and occlusion together when developing products for dry or barrier-compromised skin.


 

Don’t Forget the Cleansing System

Barrier-supportive formulation isn’t only about what you add to a moisturizer.

It is equally important to consider what may be removing too much from the skin.

Overly aggressive cleansing systems, excessive exfoliation, high-pH cleansers, frequent scrubbing, and poorly balanced active formulations can place unnecessary stress on the stratum corneum.

A beautifully formulated barrier cream cannot completely compensate for an overly harsh cleansing routine.

When developing products for sensitive or dry skin, formulators should pay particular attention to:

  • Surfactant selection
  • Surfactant concentration
  • Finished-product pH
  • Cleansing frequency
  • Exfoliating ingredients
  • Fragrance and essential oils
  • Overall active load
  • The intended skin type

 

Formulate to Support the Skin

Supporting the skin barrier is not about adding one fashionable ingredient.

It requires looking at the entire formulation.

A well-designed product should provide the appropriate balance of:

Hydration + Emolliency + Lipids + Occlusion + Mildness

The formulator’s goal is to create products that leave the skin feeling hydrated, soft, supple, comfortable, and resilient while supporting the skin’s natural protective functions.

Understanding how the skin barrier works makes it possible to formulate more thoughtfully—especially for dry, mature, sensitive, and easily irritated skin.
